In-Between: [Re]winding life's thread

17 July - 21 AUgust 2021

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

Australian based Dutch-born artist Mieke van den Berg explores cultural separation through complex sculpture expanded installation and performance. Through a matrilineal feminist lens, Mieke addresses the themes of displacement, memory and trauma.

Mieke is investigating the liminal space we find ourselves in, disrupted by geographical, traumatic events and cultural displacement. Through the exhibition she is looking at cultural commonalities in craft, values, objects and memories of home to find a sense of belonging to redefine oneself. Mieke invites the viewer to experience this through the spatial experience of wool, thread, craft and chair.

A Finalist in Lyn McCrea memorial drawing prize 2020, Mieke was also an excellence award winner of the Local Artist - Local Content Art Prize 2020 at the Caloundra Regional Gallery and in 2019 an artist in residence at Draw to Perform, Brighton in the UK
