OPENING NIGHT FRIDAY 3 MARCH 2023, 6pm

The Works of Peter Strickland

I can paint with freedom..."

In Peter’s words; “As a youngster in class I was constantly being told that my paintings and illustrations did not make up for my poor spelling. In my 90th year I am no longer concerned with spelling. I can paint with freedom!"

Trained as an art teacher, over his life Peter has exhibited in galleries in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, England and Canada. His works appear in private collections in UK, Canada, Switzerland, France, Victoria and Queensland.

After seeing the work of Australian Aboriginal artists in Central and Northern Australia, an exhibition of the German Expressionists and various Paris Galleries, Peter was inspired to re-think his approach to painting.

He rediscovered acrylic and oil on canvas, and his work is now bolder, with more use of fauvist aesthetics and a complementary colour palette

His new subjects are built around colour and texture, gleaned from natural things about life. Although the subject is often obscured, Peter finds his latest abstracts are far more challenging and time consuming. They demand more thought. “Each canvas should define what creativity really is”, he said.

Curated by daughter Kari, Novospective/Retrospective is a showcase of large and bold recent works and a lifetime of painting. It celebrates a lifetime of artistic endeavour.
