EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

This collection of surrealist figurative sculpture, organic ceramic vessels and found object installation, ignites a personal and authentic response to the collective themes of awakening from the unconscious human experience. Embodied is a deep personal narrative around issues of life and death, loss, reconnection, rebirth and personal identity.

The process of what it is to be human is deeply examined: the light and the dark, the traumatic and the healed, the introspective and the retrospective. Expressed is a belief in the value of exploration and personal resolution, both individually and collectively. Cultivate highlights the importance of all relationships as vessels or incubators for discovery: of self, earth, community and creativity itself.

“A knowing response to earth, a reconnection to self and a connection to others through creativity”.

In response to receiving the “Geoffrey Walker Fellowship” in 2019 awarded by the Suncoast Clayworkers, a body of work has arisen after travelling to the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina USA to study with the world-renowned Sculptor Arthur Gonzalez.

This body of work freely and openly explores the processes of what it is to be human: the dark and the light, the traumatic and the healed, the introspective and the retrospective. The work aims to convey belief in the value of self-exploration and personal resolution, both individually and collectively. It hopes to portray a message that we are joined by our processes, although we may experience them in unique and individual ways. The unduly timing of the 2020 pandemic has pushed the universal themes of reality as we know it, and offers us an opportunity for deep reflection and personal enquiry.

CULTIVATE is a body of work, expressive in nature, includes small and large figurative and portrait sculpture, large vessels and ceramic installations incorporating the use of natural found objects. The work embodies deep personal narrative around issues of life and death, loss, reconnection, rebirth and personal identity. There are also strong themes referencing earth and materials used in the ceramic process.
