One World (Not to Scale)

Artist: Wilhelmus Breikers

OPENING EVENT: 2:00 - 4.00pm, Saturday 26 March 2022

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

Issues, places and events present opportunities to think about things and to ask; “Is the world still a better place?”.  The works in ‘One World – not to scale’ are expressions of opinions about some of those things. They are also expressions of enjoyment in the use of materials and processes.

Some of the drawings and paintings are declarative, rhetorical and loud.

Wilhelmus’ work ranges from more literal responses to subjects to conceptual and issues-based works. It references traditions of artmaking that acknowledge the significance of the ordinary, commonplace and banal, and also references traditions that preference metaphor over the memetic. In his work Wilhelmus seeks the satisfaction of finding an internal logic as much as the satisfaction of retaining a correspondence with the materiality of the subject itself.

Wilhelmus was born in Holland and came to Australia in 1957.
